A humanist leadership. The Green Nose Managing Director

A humanist leadership. The Green Nose Managing Director

The dream team of an Optimistic Hospital is made up of three types of superheroes, one of which is the Green Nose Managing Director.

The Green Nose Managing Director is the person who assumes responsibility for the healthcare organization.

Not only must he behave like a Positive Manager, but he must also, as you may have guessed, have the soul of a Captain Optimistic.

He shares virtues and strengths with Captain Optimistic. In our book Dreaming about an Optimistic Hospital and in our blog you will find the set of behaviors, attitudes and values that lead Captain Optimistic towards a more humane way of doing things:

Captain Optimistic

These behaviors and values form the DNA of the Captain Optimistic and are present in the Positive Manager and the Green Nose Managing Director.

In addition, the Green Nose Managing Director must lead the organization along the path of transformation to a positive corporate culture.

The Green Nose Managing Director should be the guardian of the effectiveness of the system, the training of professionals and the corporate unit.

To do this, they must use all organizational tools in a transparent and effective way.

It is very important for the Green Nose Managing Director or the Positive Manager to report on a regular basis in a simple and concise way to the whole organization or its team about the results obtained.

The Green Nose Managing Director must prepare other leaders so as not to become irreplaceable.

Policies that align and build trust

In order to build an Optimistic Hospital, the Green Nose Managing Director promotes equal opportunity policies for all, regardless of their abilities, gender and age.

A fair and motivating incentive plan for everyone:

  • A policy to balance working and family life.
  • The promotion of learning through a continuous training plan and/or distance learning through online training.
  • A policy of promoting physical well-being through sport and a balanced diet.
  • Continuous and effective horizontal and vertical communication. Achieving the right quality of content, tone and frequency is the great challenge.

Remember,

the source of information

is always responsible for what is understood.

  • The creation of a climate of psychological security.

This implies generating spaces where one knows one can «open up» because there is confidentiality and respect.

This also implies offering a framework where error is not concealed, but managed: not to blame, but to learn…

Department heads must create and sustain this climate. They can also count on the external help of specialized professionals (psychologists, trainers…).

I’m sure you’ve been able to recognize many of these characteristics in yourself and in some of your co-workers. You may also have found areas of improvement that allow you to continue growing as a professional.

If enjoyed meeting the Green Nose Managing Director, don’t miss the Captain Optimistic and the Positive Manager.

The Key role of the positive manager

The Key role of the positive manager

He is, along with Green Nose Managing Director  and Captain Optimistic, one of the three superheroes who transform hospitals into optimistic hospitals.

He is an intermediate manager, he is in charge of a team and his role is essential to achieve the adequate psycho-social health to enable a positive patient experience.

Likewise, the application of the centre’s management policies depends to a large extent on its communication skills.

This is the type of leadership that a manager should offer to his team:

Be a transformational leader:

He sees the great potential in each person.

He looks at their strengths and tries to enhance them.

When you treat people the way they are, you slow them down. When you treat them as the people they can become, giving them confidence and hope, you help them to offer their best version.

Thanks to your support, your collaborators are able to visualize it and gradually reach it.

Be a compassionate leader:

manager poIn addition to feeling empathy for others, he strives to help them, to alleviate their suffering.

Compassion in health is the openness to the suffering of others and the willingness to relieve it. It is the way to make science human.

Be an exemplary leader:

He is a person of integrity and fairness. He does not demand of others what he is not willing to do himself.

In addition to «saying», he does «what he says».

Be a conscious leader:

He knows who he is and what his true life purpose is.

He knows that in order to achieve his best version, constant personal transformation is the key.

He seeks to free himself from his unconscious fears.

Be a generator of alliances:

He seeks support from other services, other specialties within the organization: DOES NOT talk about » his » patient.

Take advantage of the common service to interest groups to break the «silos» between specialties.

He is convinced that, no matter how extensive his know-how and experience, he barely grasps part of reality and needs others to cover a situation.

He fosters alliances between people, between services, between specialties…

He knows that no one can remain isolated so as not to get burned.

He offers autonomy to his coworkers:

In spite of his superpowers, Captain Optimistic cannot fulfill his mission if he does not feel institutional support.

The positive manager is the closest representative of the institution.

Without this plot of autonomy, it is almost impossible for Captain Optimism to fly high.

Be a communicator:

manager positivoHe knows that he must constantly communicate with his team.

He knows that for a good communication one must first listen.

He never communicates too much.

He knows that the responsibility lies on the sender.

Through good communication, he involves his teams in the decision-making processes, and makes them feel an important part of the process.

Did you enjoy meeting our Positive Manager?

Surely you have recognized in many aspects some leaders with whom you have worked in the past or with whom you are lucky enough to work today. We invite you to share this post with them to continue building Optimist Hospitals.

Fly High Captain Optimistic!

Fly High Captain Optimistic!

He’s the hero who lives and works at Optimista Hospital. Surely you know him!

You come across this person every day in the corridors of your health centre. It is this doctor who plays with the children so that they relax before entering the operating room. It’s this administrative assistant who treats everyone with a smile.

He is someone who puts his strengths at the service of others. Someone who has understood that to «flourish» in his life, to feel happy and complete has to add:

A transcendent purpose.

+

A positive attitude of openness, of learning.

You know him, don’t you?

He is someone who lives connected with the deepest part of his essence, with his passion, which is to care for and heal others. He knows the value of a grateful smile. He focuses on the most favorable aspects of each situation. He is able to transform himself into an informal leader to turn his dreams into reality. He is the Optimistic Captain. In our book Dreaming of an Optimistic Hospital we reveal some of its main characteristics:

Captain Optimistic

Whoever you are dealing with (patient, family member, manager, partner). Captain Optimist does not look at the age, gender, race, religion, social class or capabilities of the person he is dealing with. Captain Optimist does not allow himself to be dominated by the stress, ego or limiting beliefs and puts himself in the service of others. He does not talk about «his patient», «his shift», «his plans». He is collaborative.

Captain Optimist sees things on a more positive note, regardless of whether they are good or bad. Savours the wonder of life. Has a lot of vitality. Shows his/her positive mood. His smiles are contagious. With a positive attitude, it is easier to take on the challenges presented to us. It makes us more tolerant and open, and we adapt better to changes, enriching ourselves as people.

Even if he does not have the power that confers a formal and hierarchical responsibility over other people, Captain Optimist knows that anyone can become a leader, as he knows that everyone can place themselves at the service of the others. The leader is someone whom others look at and follow because they admire and respect him. They follow him because they have decided to do so. They have given him authority.

Captain Optimist knows himself. Knows to manage his/her emotions. Understands the emotions of others (sick people, family members and peers). Knows how to manage the emotions of others. Demonstrates empathy in managing the emotions of others.

Captain Optimist is interested in continuing training and learning by setting personal goals that lead to feeling happiness for the job well done. He knows that learning can always take place, that every moment is an opportunity to improve. The perspective given by experience leads to prudence in judgements and decisions when circumstances so require. He shares acquired knowledge. He is humble in learning from others.

Captain Optimist is resilient.  Does not bend in the face of adversity. He is strong. He does not complain. He uses negative experiences for learning and absorbing stress and failure as engines of change, not as bottomless wells in which to gloat. Strengthens himself on every little bit of progress, on every triumph: celebrates every step or milestone. He knows that you can only get things done by being persistent. He feeds the flames of hope.

Captain Optimist is aware of the importance of the body/mind/energy balance. He attains it through: Healthy food, Adequate rest, Work-life balance, Moderate sport, Laughter with Friends, Fun hobbies and Meditation.

When it seems that nothing can be done, then there is much to be done! A Captain Optimist does not look for excuses, takes as truth the parable of the hummingbird and does their part. Is the engine of change. Is brave. Is innovative. Is curious, looks at things from a different perspective. A blank wall can become a mural of paintings, glass on a blackboard …his service in an Optimistic Building.

What makes the Captain Optimist truly invincible is that he has become aware that he has wonderful abilities that can change the world (the world of many people). He does not compare himself with anyone, he knows they is a unique and wonderful being. Demonstrates gratitude for life. Feels happy and grateful. Values the small gestures of service and kindness that they have with him. Knows how to say, “thank you very much.

Did you like meeting our Optimistic Captain? I’m sure you’ve recognized yourself in many ways and have been able to discover some behaviors that you could improve. That’s what Captain Optimism was born for. To fly high and inspire you in your daily life.
